Abstract

Professor Giannopoulos is Director, Hellenic Institute of Transport; Professor, Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki; and Chairman, South East European Transport Research Forum. He is a member ofthe World Society for Ekistics (WSE). The text that follows is based on the contribution by the author to the 15th International Symposium on Theory and Practice in Transport Economics of the European Conference of Ministers of Transport, Thessaloniki, June 2000, and is a slightly edited and revised version of a paper made available by the author to participants at the WSE Symposion "Defining Success of the City in the 21st Century," Berlin, 24-28 October, 2001, in which he was finally unable to participate.
